John Allen Hawley

A Worthington R.D. 2 serviceman, John A. Hawley, 21, died Tuesday, November 4,
1969, in the Oakland Veterans Administration Hospital, in Pittsburgh, from a
cerebral concussion sustained in a violent auto accident at 10:25 p.m. Monday,
November 3, 1969, on Interstate Route 80.

Hawley, who was stationed with the Air Force at the Wright-Patterson Air Force
Base, Dayton, Ohio, was going to visit his brother, Homer Hawley, a State
Trooper stationed in DuBois. The two brothers and a friend of young Hawley's,
David Booth, 20, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, were going to go hunting.

According to Strattanville State Police, who investigated the accident, Hawley
apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his 1969 Mustang, and crossed to the
opposite side of the highway, where the coupe hit an embankment and landed on
its roof, two miles from the Mechanicsville exit of I-80.

Funeral services for Air Force Sergeant John Allen Hawley, 21, of 5256 Cobb
Drive, Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Worthington, who died at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 4, 1969, in the Oakland Veterans Administration Hospital, Pittsburgh of
injuries received in an auto accident, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the
Franklin Union Baptist Church, Worthington.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Hawley suffered a cerebral concussion in the accident, which occurred at 10:25
p.m. Monday on Interstate Route 80.

He was a sergeant with the 17th Bomb Wing Squadron stationed at Wright Patterson
Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, and had served for a year in Vietnam. He was en
route to visit his brother, Homer Hawley, a State Trooper stationed in DuBois,
when the accident occurred.

Born in Kittanning, September 2, 1948, John Allen Hawley was the son of Thomas
Jennings and Wilma E. (Claypoole) Hawley.

He was a member of the Franklin Union Baptist Church of Worthington, and a
graduate of Worthington-West Franklin High School, class of 1966.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia F. (Easter) Hawley; a daughter, Lisa Gail
Hawley at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Hawley Sr of Worthington;
three brothers, Thomas J. Hawley Jr of West Kittanning, Harlon M. of Ford Cliff,
and Homer L. of DuBois; two sisters, Mrs. Dale (Wilma J.) Barnhart of
Worthington R.D. 2 and Barbara L. Hawley at home; his grandmother, Mrs. Emma
(Boney) Claypoole of Worthington R.D. 2; five nieces and a nephew, and a number
of aunts and uncles.

Friends of Sgt. John Allen Hawley of 5256 Cobb Drive, Dayton, Ohio, formerly of
Worthington, who died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1969, will be received at the
SNYDER-CRISSMAN FUNERAL HOME in Kittanning, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday
and Friday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Franklin
Union Baptist Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Glenn Dick, pastor,
officiating.

Burial will be in the Franklin Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Worthington, Pa.
