Clifford Gray Victim of Crash Near Saxonburg

Auto Hits Concrete Bridge Abutment; Two Others Hurt

Clifford Gray, 18, R.D. 1, Cabot, Pa., became Butler County's 38th traffic
fatality this year and the third in four days when he was mortally injured in an
accident at 3:21 p.m., Sunday, December 21, 1952, five miles west of Saxonburg,
Pa., and Route 8 on the Dinner Bell Road.

Gray died at 10:30 p.m., December. 21, 1952, in the Butler County Memorial
Hospital. Butler, Pa., of a possible fractured skull, fractured jaw, and shock,
according to Deputy Coroner J. Clinton Atwell.

State Police said Gray was a passenger in an auto driven by Richard Schiebel.
The other occupant of the car was Joan Schiebel, sister of the driver.

Injured were:

Richard Schiebel, 20, Cabot R.D. 1; lacerations to the face and shoulders and
possible fractured leg; admitted to the Butler County Memorial Hospital;
condition "only fair."

Jean Schiebel, 18, Cabot R.D. 1; fractured nose, lacerations to the legs, and
shock; admitted to the Butler County Memorial Hospital; condition "only fair."

According to investigating officers, the auto was traveling west when it
suddenly careened from the highway onto the berm. The vehicle went out of
control and smashed head-on into a concrete bridge abutment.

Officers said a nurse who was motoring past the wreck administered first aid to
the injured. Another passing motorist called Saxonburg and the injured persons
were rushed to the hospital in the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company ambulance.

The girl and the dead youth were knocked unconscious in the crash.

Police said the car, a 1947 Buick, was demolished. Damages were estimated at
$1,000. Investigation is being continued.

Gray is the son of George Arthur McMillen and Ida Ruth (Hill) Gray and at the
time of death lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Lottie P. Hill, Cabot, R.D. 1. He
was born February 13, 1934 in Kitttaning.

He was a 1952 graduate of Worthington West Franklin High School, Worthington,
Pa.

The youth is survived by two sisters; Miss Signora LaRue Hill, Cabot R.D. 1, and
Mrs. Herbert S. Gray, of Worthington, Pa.; and his grandmother, Mrs. Lottie P.
Hill, Cabot R.D. 1.

Friends are being received at the John W. Rhodes Funeral Home in Kittanning, Pa.
Services will be held from the funeral home at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 24,
1952.

Burial will be in the Manor Cemetery, Kittanning, Pa.
