Ruben "Rube" Waddell, 71, of 839 Pine Creek Drive, Greenville, SC, died
Saturday, January 29, 1994, at St Francis Hospital, Greenville.
 
Born June 18, 1922, in Sagamore, Pa., the son of the late William and Clara
Isabelle (Barker) Waddell.
 
He was a 1939 graduate of Worthington-West Franklin High School, Worthington,
Pa.
 
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in African and Italian
Campaigns. In the Italian Campaign he served in the first Allied Wave to take
the Italian peninsula as a driver for General Mark Clark. While in the Army, he
received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal for World War II, American
Campaign Medal and European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three
Bronze Stars.
 
He was a major in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1967 after 21 years of
service. While in the Air Force, he flew transport cargo missions and relief
missions to Chile, Lebanon, Iraq, Korea and Iran and was stationed in the
Philippines, Thailand, Germany, Greenland and the South Pole. He served a tour
of duty in Vietnam while stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines
and was formerly stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base, Greenville, SC. His Air
force medals include the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal,
Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal
with one Bronze Star, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two Oak-leaf
Clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with
one Bronze Star. Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Air Force Longevity
Service Award with four Oak-leaf Clusters.
 
He was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Greenville and the VFW
Chapter of Kittanning, Pa.
 
Surviving are his wife, Audrey (Hindman) Waddell of Greenville; two daughters,
Eileen R. Waddell, and friend, Wim Roefs, of Sumter, NC. and Cheryl W. (James L.
Begley of Durham, NC.; a son William R. (Cynthia White) Waddell of Easley, SC.;
granddaughter, Clara Dale Waddell of Easley; sister, Clara "Jean" Waddell Boal
of Fenelton, Pa.; and one niece and four nephews.
 
He was predeceasd by a brother, Robert Henry Waddell, Dec. 19, 1978, of
Greenville, Miss.
 
The family is at the residence. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday,
Jan. 31, 1994, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel, 639 North Main
Street, Greenville.
 
Services 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 1994, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown
Chapel.
 
Burial in Greenville Memorial Gardens, Greenville, SC.
